Generation for Change & Development (GENCAD) is pleased to announce the date for our annual educational sponsorship appeal: Step Up for Africa Sponsored Walk. The funds raised for this appeal will go to orphans and desperately needy students at secondary schools in Mandera District, North Eastern Province, Kenya.

Then why not join Step Up for Africa Sponsored Walk on Saturday, July 10th 2010, from Mile End Park to Little Venice (7.5 miles) via the beautifully scenic Regent's Canal, London. All you need is commitment, energy, and a good pair of old walking shoes!
North Eastern Province is the poorest province in Kenya; 93 % of women there have no education at all. The funds raised will go towards paying the school fees of students from extremely poor families in the province, including many who are orphans and from single-parent families.
The recent introduction of free primary education for all children has put massive pressure on secondary schools to increase their intake. However, secondary schools in North Eastern Province have been severely under-funded in the past and still lack the capacity to provide enough places for many children in the province, especially girls. Female students are the most vulnerable, because if parents are struggling to pay for their children's school fees, then girls' education is the first to suffer. Once these girls are taken out of education in their early teens, they generally enter menial employment, or are married off early so they are less of a burden to their families.
Sponsoring a student could mean as little as $280/£192 annually, or $22/£16.00 per month. Through this event, we are aiming to raise £10000, which will pay for the school fees and basic equipment of 13 secondary school students for four years!
