Due to the successful delivery of an outreach programme in Wajir and Isiolo recently, Doctors for hope in conjunction with GENCAD is conducting a three days medical outreach programme in Takaba town. During this event approximately 3000 patients will be screened and provided with free medicines and health advice. The patients include 200 eye patients of which about 40 require urgent cataract operations.

Thousands of Kenyans in Mandera West District live in the rural areas where health facilities are inadequate, inaccessible and unaffordable. Several families who lost their livestock are faced with hunger and communicable disease. Doctors for Hope in collaboration with the local communities and partner organization are conducting a three day free comprehensive medical outreach program on 26th -28th October 2009. The services to be provided included include the following:

1. Free medical consultation,
2. Malnutrition (MUAC) screening
3. Vitamin A campaign
4. Deworming exercise
5. Free medicine and immunization,
6. Free eye screening and cataract operations.
7. Dental health care

The district has only one health centre which has been upgraded to district hospital level recently with no much change in the service delivery.

Mandera West has the worst health indicators in the Republic of Kenya. A recent survey conducted by ACF-Kenya has shown crude mortality rate of 0.9/10,000/day and Under Five mortality rate of 1.15/10,000/day

Although no major disease epidemic outbreaks were reported in the recent past Malnutrition, Malaria, diarrhea and respiratory infections remained the main cause of morbidity and mortality

With water scarcity expected to increase due to rain failure in the long rainfall season, associated diseases like worm infestation, skin, eye, ear conditions and diarrheal diseases may pose a challenge and complicate the current crisis if urgent intervention are not taken.

Findings from independent annual integrated SMART nutrition surveys conducted between Jan-March 2009 by Action Against Hunger (ACF) reveals a dramatic increase in the past one year.
All the findings indicate an alarming rate of Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) of 32.3% in Mandera west District (twice WHO accepted emergency threshold of 15.

The HIV prevalence rate has recorded unprecedented increase up from < 1% in 2007 to 2.5% in 2000. Measles Immunization coverage stands at 66%.Vitamin a supplementation is at 30 %.

It is because of these dismal statistics that Doctors for Hope and GENCAD are making this urgent appeal for funds to help deliver this medical outreach Programme in Takaba.
