Currently GENCAD is supporting schools and other educational institutions in North Eastern Province , Kenya . North Eastern Province lags behind other provinces in Kenya in terms of socio-economic development. For instance, the province has the lowest primary and secondary school enrolment rate, which stands at 9.8% and 4.8% respectively.
Adult literacy and numeracy rate is 8.1% and 9.6% respectively. It is because of such dismal statistics on education that we felt the need to support schools and adult literacy programmes in Mandera District.
Our area of focus will be renovation of school infrastructures, such as: classrooms; libraries; provision of laboratory equipment and books; linking schools in the UK with schools in Kenya ; and a sponsorship programme.
Also GENCAD's goal is to enable people to exercise their rights and manage their own lives. We believe that provision of quality basic education and sustainable economic opportunities to communities will empower them to exercise their rights and improve the well being of their families. We strive to work with our local partners to achieve our goals.
We also lobby at national and international levels on behalf of marginalised communities in areas where we have an operation and also encourage communities to participate in social and political activities, such as seeking better government services and political accountability.
We plan to scale up our operations gradually and strategically in the coming years to Somalia and Ethiopia . However in case of an emergency in Ethiopia and Somalia , GENCAD will extend assistance to affected communities. Our assistance will be channelled through established organisations operating in the affected region.
