Secondary Education.

We provide classroom resources and scholarships for orphaned and vulnerable girls in secondary education.

Secondary Education.

Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.  Education reduces poverty, empowers women and helps prevent diseases.

According to the World Bank, secondary education is not only vital to the development of a young person, but also to the economic, social, and human capital development of nations around the world (World Bank). According to the World Bank,  education can connect the different destinations and take young people where they want to go in life.

In Kenya, the introduction of free primary education in 2003 has put a lot of pressure on the secondary education sub-sector.

The issues are:

  • Low number of students completing primary schools nationally
  • Low investment by the government in the physical infrastructure means limited capacity
  • Existing regional  economic disparities such as in  arid and semi-arid regions
  • Lack of adequate teachers

Science Education

Since 2004, GENCAD has provided laboratory equipment to 11 secondary schools and teaching aids for science subjects to 14 secondary schools.

Our partner Charity, LabAid Trust, receives used Laboratory equipment from schools, colleges, and universities in the UK and refurbish them before handing them over to GENCAD for distribution to schools in Mandera County. Since the start of this project,

The schools which have received laboratory equipment have seen an increase in students studying science subjects and their performance.

Impacts so far;
1. Over 6000 students in 11 secondary schools have benefited.
2. At Mandera Secondary School students choosing to study sciences have gone up; Biology 60%, Physics 420% and Chemistry 102%
3. Exam performance has gone up; Biology 27%, Physics 98% and Chemistry 46%.

Orphans’ Scholarship

We provided full scholarships for secondary education for orphans and vulnerable children particularly girls. Under this project, we have supported 150 students complete secondary school.

The role of effective participation of women in development and the benefit that accrues to them, as a result; for instance high income, better conditions at workplaces and their involvement in decision-making is also important.

Education is central to enabling women and girls to achieve these goals.  GENCAD aims to advance creative ways and means that would enhance women’s participation in the process of development both as beneficiaries and agents of change at a community, national and international level.
We will aim to achieve these goals through;

  • Provision of quality education for girls.
  • Engage the communities to address cultural barriers to education.
  • Adult literacy and numeracy.
  • Effective advocacy for women’s participation in the management of community affairs and development activities.
  • Empower women through life skills training.
  • Advocate against child labour.

Library Support

We have partnered with BookAid International to supply textbooks to libraries in secondary schools.

GENCAD signed a partnership agreement with BookAId International in 2017. This project aims to provide community and school libraries in the region with quality books to encourage the culture of reading for leisure and academic purposes.

So far, two secondary schools, two colleges, one community library and a community-based organisation supporting primary schools in the establishment of book clubs have benefited. We intend to supply all community libraries with books in the coming years.
